How Deep Should a Raised Bed Be?

There is no single ideal depth. If roots can grow into healthy soil below, the bed itself can be relatively shallow. On concrete or unsuitable soil, the depth of the fill becomes much more important.

Choose the situation before the number

Start by identifying whether roots can enter healthy soil below the frame. If they can, the wall does not define the full root zone. If concrete or another hard surface blocks them, the fill inside the bed must provide the available depth. For poor or compacted soil, consider the cited soil-loosening approach before treating it like an impermeable surface.

Then enter the depth you plan to fill

The Extension guidance helps you choose an input; the calculator handles only the volume math. Measure the bed's inside length and width, then enter the actual fill depth you plan to buy. For a top-up project, enter only the additional layer—not the full wall height. Keeping those decisions separate avoids turning a worked example or a conditional range into an automatic recommendation.

Why what is underneath the bed matters

A bed placed over healthy, usable garden soil is connected to a larger growing area. Roots are not necessarily limited to the added soil inside the frame; they can continue downward. That is why sidewall height alone does not describe the entire root zone. Both Minnesota Extension and Colorado State Extension emphasize this distinction.

Concrete and pavement are different. Roots cannot continue into soil below, so all usable growing media, water, and root space must be provided inside the bed. Poor or compacted native soil falls between those situations: improving access to the soil below can change how much the added layer must do.

Two related measurements

Raised-bed height is not always the same as root-zone depth

Bed or wall height

The physical height of the boards, blocks, or metal sides above the surrounding ground.

Usable rooting depth

The growing media in the bed plus any suitable soil below that roots can actually enter.

A tall frame does not automatically create better soil, and a shallow frame does not automatically mean a shallow root zone. Evaluate drainage, compaction, and whether a barrier separates the bed from the ground. Hard surfaces

Raised beds on concrete or patios

Maryland Extension gives conditional crop guidance specifically for raised beds on hard, impermeable surfaces. It lists at least 8 inches for leafy greens, beans, and cucumbers, and 12–24 inches for peppers, tomatoes, and squash.

Those ranges apply to that hard-surface context, where roots cannot use soil below. They should not be presented as a universal depth chart. Maryland Extension

Limited native soil

Raised beds over poor or compacted soil

Maryland Extension describes loosening the underlying soil so drainage, aeration, and future root access can improve. It also describes providing at least about 8 inches of a suitable compost-and-topsoil or compost-and-soilless-media mixture over the existing soil.

If the soil below cannot support crop roots at all, Colorado State Extension describes roughly 8–12 inches of soil as a minimum range. Conditions and crops still matter. Maryland Extension · Colorado State Extension
