How Much Does a Cubic Yard of Soil Weigh?

Understand why a cubic yard tells you how much space soil occupies—not how heavy the load will be—and how a known bulk density can be converted into a planning estimate.

Start with the unit

A cubic yard is volume, not weight

A cubic yard describes the space occupied by a material. Two materials can fill the same 27-cubic-foot volume while having different weights because the amount of mass packed into that space is different.

That mass-per-volume relationship is called bulk density. The USDA NRCS defines soil bulk density as soil weight divided by soil volume. A supplier selling soil by the cubic yard is therefore stating volume; the listing alone does not tell you a universal number of pounds. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service

Why soil weight can vary so much

Penn State's conversion table gives 1,685.564 pounds per cubic yard for each 1 g/cm³ of bulk density. Multiplying a known density by that factor provides the values below.

This is a density-conversion table, not a guaranteed retail-topsoil weight chart.

NRCS describes approximately 1.0–1.6 g/cm³ as a normal bulk-density range for agricultural soils. That scientific context demonstrates variability; it is not a promised weight range for delivered topsoil, compost, or a raised-bed mix. The conversion factor comes from Penn State Extension.

Material conditions

What makes one cubic yard heavier or lighter?

Moisture

Water adds mass, so the same soil can weigh more when it is wetter. Dry and field-moist measurements should not be treated as interchangeable.

Soil composition and texture

Different proportions of mineral particles and organic material can produce different bulk densities even when the measured volume is the same.

Organic matter

An organic-rich blend can have a different density from mineral-heavy soil. A label such as topsoil, compost, or raised-bed mix is not a universal density value.

Compaction

Less pore space generally means more soil mass is packed into the same volume, so handling and measurement conditions matter.

NRCS Soil Survey materials distinguish air-dry, oven-dry, and field-moist bulk-density records and their measurement methods. This is why a density value should be used with its stated condition and method rather than treated as a product-wide constant. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service

Worked example

A density-based example

Penn State demonstrates the conversion with a bulk density of 1.33 g/cm³. Applying the published factor gives:

1.33 × 1,685.564

2,241.8 lb per cu yd

1.12 short tons per cu yd

This is a unit-conversion example, not an average weight for every topsoil or soil mix.

Raised-bed example

From bed volume to a hypothetical weight

A 4 ft × 8 ft bed filled 12 inches deep has this calculated volume:

4 × 8 × (12 ÷ 12) = 32 cu ft

32 ÷ 27 = 1.185... cu yd

1.185... × 2,241.82,657 lb

This uses a hypothetical 1.33 g/cm³ density. It is a mathematical example, not a prediction of what your actual raised-bed mix will weigh.

Planning beyond volume

Why soil weight matters

A reasonable weight estimate can help you recognize the scale of a delivery, plan how material will be moved around the yard, and identify projects where a trailer, pickup, or load-bearing structure needs closer review. It does not replace product-specific or vehicle-specific information.

Do not use a generic soil-weight estimate to determine whether a vehicle can safely carry a load. Confirm the material weight with the supplier and check the vehicle's actual payload rating.

Use product-specific information

For hauling, ask your supplier for the actual material weight

If transport weight matters, supplier-specific information is more useful than a generic internet estimate. Moisture can change, soil mixes can differ, and separate stockpiles may not have the same condition. The supplier knows the actual product being loaded and may have a measured or documented weight for it.

Before collecting material in your own pickup or trailer, ask for the expected load weight and confirm it against the vehicle and trailer documentation that applies to your setup. Do not convert cubic yards into a safe hauling capacity using a generic soil figure alone.
